BLACKPINK - "DDU DU DDU DU" MV REVIEW

I can’t act nice like other people

Don’t be mistaken

I only smile easily for myself

You may not know well yet

If you want then test me

You’re so predictable

If you wanted something easy

BLACKPINK 'SQUARE UP' Album Poster.

BLACKPINK is a South Korean girl group with 4 members (Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa) from YG Entertainment. They officially debuted on August 8, 2016 with the single album Square One and tracks "BOOMBAYAH" and "WHISTLE". They also released another hit song called "As if it’s your last" last 2017.

After a year of hiatus, BLACKPINK's long-awaited comeback was welcomed with hype and support from fans all over the world. BLACKPINK 'Square Up' is a four-song EP. The hype and excitement surrounding this one have paid off with a chart-topping single "DDU-DU DDU-DU". For their latest record, “DDU-DU DDU-DU” surpassed 300 million views on YouTube. The music video accomplished this feat in approximately 69 days. This breaks the record for the fastest K-pop group music video to reach the milestone.

The music video of "DDU-DU DDU-DU" is filled with messages and symbolisms about women empowerment, feminism and the life of an artist.

Here are scenes with deeper meanings than you may have thought.

Queen Jennie

Jennie is dressed as a colorful queen sitting on her throne suggesting how the black and white rules of chess don’t apply to her. This shows how she has her own colors and decisions in life not only deciding on the black and white part of things.

Fennec Fox

The Fennec Fox symbolizes someone's core values and independent personality. Someone with a Fennec Fox personality is a pioneer of his/her own lead. That person listen well to others and only apply worthy things. In a dream symbolism, a Fennec Fox says to beware of false friends, loved ones, or beloveds. It also encourages to develop strength and courage and allow the NO’s to be no, and the yes' to be yes.

2 Rosés

This scene has 2 versions of Rosé. The Rosé in black looks up to the Rosé in white. The white Rosé is standing like a statue for the public to see looking so perfect to be real and have been put on a pedestal meaning that this is the image the public wants and continues to see, the perfect image of an artist.

The Rosé in black on the other side represents Rosé’s true self, not crowned and a much simpler looking girl who moves through the shadows like an ordinary human being she is from the very start.

Jisoo’s Umbrella

This scene shows how Jisoo uses her umbrella as a shield protecting herself from the sparks that try to burn her. This suggests that she will continue to survive every trial and bad things the world throws at her and at the end will walk unscathed.

Jennie’s Glamorous Tank

Jennie with her glam tank is another imagery used to show how she breaks stereotype when she threw her shopping bags and choosing the tank meaning that a girl will not be someone who the society chooses them to be and has the freedom to like what the others don't usually suggest.

Jisoo’s showcase

In this scene there are also two Jisoos. One is a perfect image and the other is a living real person walking up to the front.

There are "fans" taking photos of her perfect image but as soon as she stumbled and made a mistake, the “fans” turn their phones to her direction pointing like guns.

This symbolizes how internet and social media is used to build a profile of someone with their expectations and also burning that someone down easily as soon as they make mistakes or do something the netizens don't approve of. It also shows how one little mistake can make an idol's life turn upside down.

Rosé’s chandelier

Rosé swings on a chandelier like a bird in a cage making the lights flicker. This suggest that any situation or person that may try to hinder her freedom she will keep swinging until the power completely goes out and break free.

Pink wisteria

Pink wisteria symbolizes love, mystery and beauty. Since wisteria vines bloom in spring and early summer, the wisteria in BLACKPINK’s MV growing in darkness and not in their natural environment suggests that in spite of being in a new surrounding or face of challenges, she will live and make that place even beautiful.

PINK

Overall, the color pink was used to create the emphasis of the control and power with the every situation the members face.

The music video clearly shows the meaning of the song and hold deeper messages for the viewers to ponder upon and realize. It is aesthetically made and matches the visuals of the singers. The camera angles are on point and is suited for the scenes being shown.

I really recommend watching the video if you are fond of aesthetically looking cinematography accompanied by this bop and just fire song and of course if you love Hallyu (Korean Wave).
